The California State Capitol and a nearby construction site have been cleared and deemed safe after employees were evacuated Friday following the discovery of a threatening handwritten note.

The California Highway Patrol said construction workers found the note written on a wall at the Annex construction site and reported it to officers.

Employees were evacuated from the historic West Wing of the California State Capitol Friday as CHP investigated the threat.

Officials said there were no injuries. The CHP said it will continue following investigative leads related to the initial threat.

"We're collecting evidence around where it was written. There is security footage inside the building, so we're cataloging time frames on when and where, and that'll take probably days to put together to figure out who or what it is," said Chief Doug Lyons with the CHP.

CHP K-9 teams conducted a sweep of the construction site and Capitol building Friday afternoon.

The CHP later confirmed the sweep was complete and both locations were cleared and deemed safe.

"We're taking it seriously, but we don't think it's anything at this point," Lyons said.

The Capitol building will reopen to the public for normal business hours Monday.
